To truly understand events in the Middle East, it is essential that scholars, journalists, government workers, military personnel, business people and diplomats familiarise themselves with Arabic/English translations for contemporary words and phrases. Media Arabic-the language of printed or broadcast news items emphasises relatively modern terms that are not covered by standard Arabic dictionaries. From 揳nti-aircraft missile,?揳xis of evil?or 揨ionism? this book lists the top 1000 words useful for understanding contemporary media Arabic. Elisabeth Kendall has taught media Arabic at the University of Oxford and the University of Edinburgh, where she is a lecturer in the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies.
